Perry and Palin
Alaska’s governor could be more hindrance than help

Texarkana Gazette Editorial
February 8, 2009

Texans are known for many traits—their fierce independence, pride of place, confidence and competitive spirit among the most noted. So a development in what promises to be a spirited Republican shootout for governor strikes us as a bit odd and even more risky.

Incumbent GOP Gov. Rick Perry faces a challenge from U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison … Last week, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin … suited up for Team Perry.

Palin has a certain cachet among conservatives. ... But Lord, have mercy, she is an outsider with an opinion about Texas politics and government. And she sounds like the Yankee she is, if we use the definition that Yankees come from north of the Red River.

Palin is from Alaska, the state that bumped Texas out of the brag book about how everything is bigger here. ... Moreover, Texas’ claim to energy fame is outsized by Alaska too. ... The temerity of Alaska to outsize Texas. It strikes deep in the heart and ego.

...

When it comes down to it, Palin doesn’t know Eskimo from Alamo about Texas government and politics. What’s more, she is unlikely to care. ...

If Perry relies too heavily on Palin, he may find himself with a lot of time to watch Russians from her front porch come January 2011.

I am an older Republican between Kay and Sarah's ages, and I am extremely delighted to have them both involved in the party at the high level they are. I would be very happy to see either of these women in the White House some day.  I have opinions about other states, and feel it is my right to hold those opinions and so does everyone else.  Please respect, and do not mock, or under estimate the influence of Sarah Palin.  She is a refreshing wind blowing for the north...  those folks aren't too different from us native Texas. I married a 'yankee boy' myself, the kind from Massachusetts!
