SARAH SAYS #1: Regulators Shouldn’t Solicit Contributions From Those They Regulate

Austin, TX – Rick Perry said former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is his “type of committed conservative,” but is Rick Perry really Palin’s type of governor? In Going Rogue, Palin recounts concerns she had over a regulator soliciting donations from those industry players he was supposed to be regulating, calling it “a conflict of interest.” In contrast, Rick Perry has “no problem” with his regulators soliciting Perry campaign contributions from those they regulate. Check out the facts below:

GOING ROGUE LESSON #1 FOR RICK PERRY

In Going Rogue, Sarah Palin Recognized The “Conflict Of Interest” Of A Regulator Soliciting Funds From “Players We Were To Be Regulating”:

Former Gov. Sarah Palin: “[Randy] Ruedrich was the key fund-raiser for the GOP and naturally solicited party dollars from the oil and gas industry players we were to be regulating, something that should have immediately been pegged as a conflict of interest.” (Sarah Palin, Going Rogue, 2009, p. 95)

But Perry Has “No Problem” With His TABC Chair Soliciting Perry Campaign Donations From Those He Regulates:

Perry-Appointed Chair Of The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission “Is Soliciting Contributions For The Governor’s Re-Election Campaign From The Owners Of Bars And Restaurants He Regulates.” “Gov. Rick Perry's appointee as chairman of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is soliciting contributions for the governor's re-election campaign from the owners of bars and restaurants he regulates. In an e-mail to hundreds of restaurants that serve alcohol, José Cuevas seeks donations of $1,000 to $5,000 for a Perry fundraiser next month at an Austin steakhouse. Cuevas, a Midland restaurateur, was appointed by Perry to the commission in 2004 and was named chairman last year.” (Wayne Slater, “TABC Chief, A Perry Appointee, Solicits Donations For Governor,” The Dallas Morning News, 10/22/09)

Asked About The Solicitation, The Perry Campaign Said It Had No Problem Whatsoever With A Perry Appointee Shaking Down Those He Regulates For Campaign Cash. “[Perry spokesman Mark] Miner said that although Perry has no problem with Cuevas’ solicitation – ‘None at all’ – he would not say whether the governor has a general policy on state regulators soliciting those they regulate.” (Wayne Slater, “TABC Chief, A Perry Appointee, Solicits Donations For Governor,” The Dallas Morning News, 10/22/09)

Jose Cuevas’s Solicitation Would Be Illegal Under Hutchison’s New Transparency Plan, And “He’s Not Happy About It.” “Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission Chair Jose Cuevas made headlines last year by soliciting donations from restaurateurs under his agency's jurisdiction. Under Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison’s newly released transparency plan, that would have been illegal. And he’s not happy about it. The ‘political solution to everything is create a new law,’ he complains.” (Abby Rapoport, “Openly Hostile,” Texas Tribune, 1/19/10)
